Need samples or photos of failed parts 1

I'll be teaching two ASM courses this coming year; one on Principles of Failure Analysis and one on Wear and Corrosion of Metals and Alloys. I'm looking for some good photos, or better yet, samples, dealing with the above subject, in particular samples of failures such as fatigue, brittle failure,tensile overload, corrosion, creep rupture, etc. I have a lot of material dealing with turbines and pumps. I'm looking for samples or photos of parts outside of those fields (automotive, gears, paper or steel industry, etc.)

There are so many available through official investigation reports into industrial accidents.

Nominate either an industry or a particular kind of failure and I'll track one down.

Interested in shipboard failures? Lots of those involving metal failure - corrosion, fatigue. Fuel pipes (fixed and flexible), cargo slings and cables.

How about a chairlift collapse?

Natural gas pipeline failure through corrosion - look up the Carlsbad, New Mexico, pipeline fire on the NTSB (US) site.

Want cold embrittlement fracture - a reactor in Belgium and a heat exchanger in Australia.

Try the Safteng site and look for hydrostatic test failures.

You will also find photos of the consequences of failure which should emphasise the message.

Since you are teaching an ASM course, why not use the examples provided in the ASM Metals Handbook "Failure Analysis and Prevention"? It is one of the best sources of information on failure, and has an enormous variety of examples. For actual samples of failed components used in the automotive industry, I suggest that you visit a local machine shop that specializes in boring cylinder blocks, planing heads, replacing valves, etc. They will have a very large supply of components that suffered in-service failure that would be appropriate for classroom examples. And they would give them to you for free.

I agree with maui. I recommend you obtain access to the ASM Handbook series through the ASM website - this will allow you to search all books for a specific item, and then you can copy the digital image and use it in your teaching materials (PowerPoint presentation, or print and use it as a transparency).
