We are currently running a 1000 KVA generator and is killing us in fuel bills, we have no other source of power. Is it possible of running generators in synchronization, of different sizes and if you require more power the next generator will automatically come start and then supply the required power.
Please what is the negatives of this?? please can somebody assist.

Yes it is possible. Make sure all the generators have same terminal voltage, phase sequence, phase angle and frequency. You can use some small PLC to control all the generators as per your requirement.

If you already own the generator, there won't be much savings as you will have to buy all new equipment. or there will be very long time period to realize return on investment. Paralleling is expensive. If your load is much lower than 1000 kVA, there may be some possibilities.

For a real answer you need to do a detailed study of the load profile and cost analysis.

You may want to look at generator that runs on different type of fuel.

Eventually, you will burn more or less similar amount of fuel per kW. Energy is energy.

Yes you may use several smaller sets and synchronize them. You may have your operators do this manually if the station is manned full time or you may purchase a load control panel that will do the job automatically.
A rule of thumb is 13 KWHr per US Gallon of fuel. Beware of the specific gravity of the fuel. A 10% change in SG will result in a 10% change in fuel consumption. If you are getting close to 13 KWHrs per gallon it may not save much money buying smaller generators switches and a load control panel.
