We have a carbon steel constructed production line, where stainless steel bars are pushed along carbon steel plates in a drying kiln. Since installing DC servo motors for control of machine movements, the entire machine has become one big magnet, with the north pole on one end and the south pole on the other. This machine is 45 feet long. How can we best demagnetize the entire machine. We are currently removing the servo motors and replacing with hydraulics, but I need to ensure that the magnetic field is dissipated permanently.

Demag is black magic. If you can settle for circular magnetism (which will not have a detectable north and south pole) you may be able to reorientate the field with an electric welder. Do you know how strong the field is, and in what direction the rail is pointing? If the rail is facing north/south it will eventually remagnitize.

demag is a rough thing for one useing non magnetic mounts, bushings, and housings will reduce the effect of the motors magnets on the frame of you equipment. degaussing on monitors for computers are done with a simple circular coil as odd as it may sound a monitor degausser might just do the trick tho it involves running that coil over the surface of the affected areas of the equipment. The monitor degaussers are avaliable from most electronics tool companies (a good place to find one is at an old computer repair place they might have a few around if you cant find one. as the older monitors still get repaired and degaussing is a must)

hope it helps

Redcliffe Magtronics [www.redcliffe.co.uk] has a great demagnetizing wand that you might be able to use. They have US agents too - check them out.

Check out a machine called a "gaussbuster" Do a search on the internet. I beileve they even have a service that will rent the unit, or they will come to your facility and degauss the machine. Good Luck
