The latest ASME edition is 2015. We have a shop using 2013 edition. When should the 2015 ASME Sect VIII be implemented.

Whenever your jurisdiction says to. Definitely check with them.

If you don't know who that is, This NBIC Page is helpful.

You might be surprised at what edition they require. As a for instance, California binds you to the 2007 edition.

Well, I'm stumped. Used to state in the Forward, "6 months after such date of issuance". Where'd it go?

Regards,

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

It is up to the local regulatory body or Jurisdiction. If neither apply, it is contractual.

Per the NBIC page below Texas stated current edition, having said that when did 2015 edition come out. If I annoy mistaking new edition are issued in January or June. So as Mike mentioned should it be implemented 6 months from date issued?

For an ASME Code shop, first depends on you QC Manual, which n all cases will say latest Edition and in forced six Months from issue or when the ASME says as can be extended.
Not true that California shops will use an older Editiins. From what I know is that al new contruction QC call to have and use the latest Editions and is mandatory. You can use to older editions for repairs or for parts used in own State with jurisdiction approvals.
I'm in california and I'm already using 2015 Ed. Else I will be violating my own Q.C.
Using 2013Ed. for orders from 2015 is still allowed.

2015 ASME Sect VIII is in effect on Jan 01 2016.
For the orders received during 2015 you have to use 2013 edition.

Well, that statement pretty much contradicts the first sentence in VIII Div. 1 Appendix 43. But if you were to change "have to" to "may", it would be correct. That's ASME's perspective. YJMV*

Richard-

Interesting. The OP specifically asked about Section VIII.

While I (seriously) appreciate your admiration for the folks working for the State of California, Cal-OSHA PVU does not set ASME policy. Since you simply added links with no explanation, you force me to assume that you mean for us to read slide 2 which is focused on Section I. And which says...
PVU powerpoint linked in previous post said:
2015 Edition published July 1, 2015, mandatory January 1, 2016.

The document by Mr. Sperko linked to above is focused on Section XI and has a similar quote on page 2, again, since you did not say anything about it you force me to assume that this is what you intended for people to focus on.

I stand by my prior statement. The quotations which you provide, though for different Sections are applicable to Section VIII as well. Yes, the 2015 editions become mandatory on 1 Jan 2016. This correlates with the first sentence of your first post. But your post was not limited to that correct statement. It also included commentary on which edition is mandatory from July 2015 thru December 2015 which is not addressed by your references and is contradicted by, well, the code.

ASME VIII-1 Appendix 43:

ASME VIII-1 (2015) said:
43-1(a): After Code revisions are approved by ASME, they may be used beginning with the date of issuance shown on the Code. Except as noted in (b) below, revisions become mandatory 6 months after the date of issuance.

43-2(b): Except as provided in (c), the Code Edition use for construction of a pressure vessel and parts shall be either the Edition that is mandatory on the date the pressure vessel or part is contracted for by the Manufacturer, or a published Edition issued by ASME prior to the contract date, which is not yet mandatory.

ASME VIII-1 (2015) date of issuance: July 1, 2015.

So, the code edition that can be used is as follows (contract date):
July 1, 2015 -> Dec 31st, 2015: 2013 or 2015 Edition.
Jan 1, 2016 and onward: 2015 Edition.
