All,
any comemnts on this detail. Customer wants new opening, wants to install LVL first, then cut studs. 16'-0" opening. older house, floor joists nailed to side of studs, studs balloon framed to roof.

Thoughts?

You could add a 2x4 ledger between the studs face nailed to the LVL to help support the joists for some belt and suspenders.

This is a good idea to help make an overall more robust joint. It’s easy, and it adds separate perpendicular shear planes.

Is the LVL sizing controlled by strength or deflection? Hopefully you used a very conservative deflection requirement for this new beam. Seems like there could be a lot of loading going into this beam - second floor, second story roof, shed roof, etc.

Good point. You want a few mm sag at most.

This is a problem with doing it this way is you can’t preload the beam at all. The floor/wall/roof above has to sag to start loading your beam.

Its controlled by deflection. its about 0.2" dead load deflection. I think I was conservative with the DL amounts too. So hopefully will be minimal
