One of my younger cousins is planning on getting married in the spring. Over the weekend she asked if I would perform the ceremony - I am quite honored... and surprised. It will be a modest size wedding at our late grandmother's home. Of course I told her "yes". Now, am in the process of learning about and becoming a duly authorized "Marriage Officiant". Found out today there are several possible routes to that goal in SC. [smile]

Congrats, SRE....certainly an honor. Not sure about SC, but in Florida, a notary can perform the ceremony. You could also become an internet minister![lol]

Ron - Yep, SC is the same as FL - notary and an internet minister are ok. One interesting thing I've learned is that only 3 states allow a notary - FL, SC and Maine.

I'm looking into what appears to be an unusual part of SC law that allows "officers authorized to administer oaths in this State" to perform the ceremony. Will see where that goes.

Found out that marriage licenses are issued and processed by Probate Court. Seems kind of ghoulish [vader2].

That's great.

But your challenge, should you decide to accept it, is to find a way to insert engineering terms and slang into the ceremony whenever you can....
I'm sure your cousin would enjoy it!!! :-D

Here in Malaysia from what I understand is that for a marriage - the couple goes to a government office and "registers" and that is that. No need for an "official" to oversee and announce H&W, etc.

Thanks, Mr. Phelps, uh, JAE, that's a good idea. Maybe something like: "Dearly beloved, we are gathered here on a floor that hopefully has a live load rating of at least 40 lb/ft2...". That one still needs some editing.

I believe the couple is looking forward to a vacation. My cousin is a doctor going though her residency in Vermont - am sure she will appreciate the time off. A (more or less) traditional family wedding is probably a good reason (excuse).
