Title says it all. My brother is a newly minted weld engineer and it's something he has been working towards for some time. I wanted to get him something to commemorate the occasion but do not have any great ideas.

He enjoys random things that have connection to some event in time. So, for example, he might enjoy a piece from the Quebec Bridge collapse (unfortunately the iron rings aren't made from the reclaimed steel anymore) or something from a time period that was significant. Ideally the gift would be one where I could get my hands on it within a couple weeks (i.e. not have to go out to sites and reclaim steel myself lol).

Anyways, thought I'd post this here because it would be where I would get the best ideas (from the structural folk) about what to get him.

Thanks

I'd say a box of nuts and bolts would be ideal.

Hmmm....A307 or A325...decisions decisions

Every single article by Duane Miller coil bound on mylar paper. Then craft a pen holder to look like a welding machine and connect it to the booklet.

Does he have hard copies of all Blodgett's books?

They are excellent and cheap!

Go to a local fab shop and see what it would cost to etch his name on to a piece of quarter inch steel and then weld that to some sort of stand where the welds are very visible. Something that might go on his desk as a nameplate.

Ask them to do it with the least compliant welds they can come up with.

JoelTXCive stole my thunder! Agree.

A visible bottle of Scotch in an welded HSS tube?

Rather than think climate change and the corona virus as science, think of it as the wrath of God. Feel any better?

Appreciate all the ideas team!

Joel/Ron: The book ideas would be excellent but unfortunately we have them all already.

I like skeletron's idea quite a bit. Though I don't think Miller is a hero of his but he does have some that he cannot read enough from.

Dik's idea is definitely going into action. Scotch inside HSS. Done.

TLHS thanks for the idea! A cool nameplate with just awful welds sounds mint.

So looks like I will be doing some combination of the above. I also found mini-welding hood charms that I can engrave with initials. I've ordered one of these as well.
