Saw a number of news reports that a roof in Kansas was blown off a school while school was in session.

From this video: Link it looks to me like it was the roofing and insulation that failed.
Not the "roof" structure. News reporters apparently didn't understand or realize that distinction I guess.

Fake news!

Is it even the "roof?" It looks more like the membrane roofing and tar paper that came off; not that it's that big a distinction, but the membrane roof isn't really held down except by its own weight. I could imagine the wind peeling up the membrane roofing and peeling that off like Scotch tape, which is kind of what it looks like.

As usual JAE...you are correct!

It was a single ply roof membrane, improperly attached! It came off in essentially one piece. Apparently had no mechanical attachment....probably just adhesive at the perimeters. Very, very poor installation (and maybe design if design professional involved).....here comes construction defect litigation.....hmmm.....should I get licensed in Kansas?

Unless there's a tornado involved (Geez Dorothy, where's Toto?) Kansas wind loads are not high (as compared to where I practice).

I did a roof failure investigation in Junction City, Kansas about 20 years ago and oddly enough, the jurisdiction by contract was not Kansas! Ended up doing an arbitration of the case in Beverly Hills, California....go figure!

Usually occurs with a breach at the roof perimeter and air gets in underneath. Because of the large areas of roofing with a 'really closed' membrane, it can take out the entire roof, as happened. We have a lot of little 'private' weather stations in Canada that provide data to the government weatherstations and are used for providing information on the weather. I've often used local stations for weather information that may be more detailed and local to the windstorm damage.

Ron - get your KS license and then meet me in KC - I can buy you multiple beers and we can solve the problems of the world like we did in your town!
[cheers]

Y'all should write up your stories and make a movie script.[wink] "Engineers for Hire" working title.

Nevermind. Prolly get your collective arses sued off, not fun.[neutral]
