re:NFPA-13 sprinkler hazard classification for Hibachi restaurant

What would the NFPA-13 sprinkler hazard classification be for the seating/cooking areas be in a Hibachi restaurant? Ordinary Group 1 seems to be the obvious answer but who knows?

Thanks, Joe Cianfarra

Do not have the book just whatever a normal restaurant is.

The stove tables have protected vent a hoods over them

That is exactly the point; a Hibachi is not quite a normal restaurant. When seperated, a restaurant seating area is typically "Light Hazard" and the "Service Area" Ordinary Hazard Group 1. Does a Hibachi grill with at-seat preperation essentially turn the entire restaurant in a "Service Area". Of course the real question is if the contents and activity use in this area give off the specific btu output during a fire to be classified as Ordinary Hazard. But those calculations are above my pay grade. :)

I never thought about it, but never felt less safe setting at Benihana
The grills I see are electric

Light Hazard. I can't see anything in one of these restaurants that warrants a higher occupancy hazard classification.

Interesting question. My instincts say Ordinary Group 1, since technically the entire area is "serving" similar to the kitchen. I would say it is worth a phone call to the AHJ to verify.
