Hello all. New guy at this so please be kind. Looking at doing a 13d system for a house. Trying to figure out how calf the system with a home tank. I’m looking a flowing 2 sprinklers at the rates GPM needed. I also have a flow test. But do I use the flow test and the pump together? Or do I start calcs at the tank. I’m also trying to figure out what pressure and GPM for the tank system. Like I said I am new at the pump and tank scene. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not into 13D much but the calcs typically start at the inlet inside the tank (typically a vortex plate) and up to your most remote head. And no, the test pipe is for testing only and does not take part in the cals. For the test pipe you typically you follow the requirements of NFPA 20.

If you are using something like the Talco Home Hydrant setup or similar, then you do not include the city flow test. Just calc to the discharge side of the fire pump.

Travis I am looking at the Talco system but I need a little more info if you dont mind helping me. I am looking at using tyco residential sidewall sprinklers. I am thinking if I use the 16 x 16 then it would 16 gpm and flowing 2 heads for 10 minutes would be a 350 gallon tank. But my problem is trying to figure out the rated pump gpm and psi. I really do appreciate any help. I am very new at pumps and trying to learn on the fly.

HH3 Performance- 350 Gallon Tank
MODEL gpm 0 10 20 30 40 50 60
HH3-200A PSI 67 63 56 50 43 35
HH3-150SP PSI 55 55 52 50 46 40
HH3-150C PSI 48 47 45 43 40
HH3-300A PSI 74 72 65 54 47 41 33
HH3-300C PSI 59 59 58 56 53 50 47

I think you don't have the best sprinkler choice there. 16' spacing should just be 13 gpm and not 16 gpm.

Just plug that pump curve into any computer calc system for fire sprinkler systems and you will be good.

Otherwise just look at your pump data there. Pick the flow that is greater than your demand. Then use the corresponding pressure. That is an over-simplified way of doing it.

I didn't catch that you said you were using residential sidewalls. Then they likely require 16 gpm.

You will need the 350 gallon tank. For the computer calcs, just use the pressure at 0 flow for static and the pressure at 40 gpm for your residual pressures.

Late to this game but what Travis said. I manually entered a six point curve into Hydra-Calc based upon Talco's pump curves for several models, save them, and just load them when I need them. I've used several other calculation programs and they should all be able to do the same thing. Other alternatives exist in demonstrating that you're within the curve but you know your AHJ's better than we do and what they expect to see. It's part of the game.
