Dear Sirs,

I have a requirement for welding cast (nodular cast) with Carbon Steel. The filler material will be SFA– 5.15 E NiFe– Cl.
Anybody see any inconvenince performing MT after welding?
Thanks

Hi Rele

yes it can , PT is also a possibility.

Denlow .

You should be using liquid penetrant testing (PT) for the weld and surrounding base material. This is a 99% Ni weld rod.

metengr. You are right. I can't believe i missed that. meh

thanks to everybody.

The filler material used is Fe 45% Ni 54%

Magnetic Particle Inspection can be used to find cracks in the base materials and at the interface with the weld, but the weld metal itself will be non-ferromagnetic due to the high nickel content.

The wet MT method will not be suitable for the actual interface of the weld because the magnetic particles will align along the weld fusion zone and make for a very difficult interpretation. Use Liquid PT if your interest is for base material surrounding the weld region and the weld metal itself.

Yes the interpretation can be challenging, but we use the technique successfully, though only for failure analysis rather than accept/reject of production parts.
