ASME Section VIII Division 1 Appendix 2 deals with the circular type flange design. but often there is a requirement for designing non-circular flanges particularly oval/elliptical type flanges which are integral part of valves.though the above appendix deals with non-circular flanges, its suitability for the above application is of doubt. is there any other design procedure or approach available for oval/elliptical type flanges ? there is a DIN standard DIN 3840 - but i am looking for still more and detailed treatise on this subject. is there a computer program/software available for such flanges ?

Please check with the ad-merkblat (german p.v. code). If I´m recalling ok, section B7 deals with flanges, including the no circular ones. And probably there are some german software the enables you to calculate them.

Hope this helps

A.E Blatch has written a paper published by ASME called bolted flanged connections for non circular pressure vessels from “advances in bolted technology 1989” this may be of some help.
