We are looking for an inspection technique that can detect pits on a tube OD. Tube OD is 38 mm and thickness is 4 mm. Tube material is 13CrMO4-5. We understand UT-IRIS and RFT can be used to detect the pits externally, however we are unable to get the necessary clarification on will the techniques be able to detect pits covered under magnetite layer externally. Based on your extensive experience please share if it is possible and if so would appreciate a brief technical explanation for the same.

Similarly if you have any other ferromagnetic tubes inspection technique in mind that can detect pits on tubes OD which is even more sensitive then UT-IRIS or RFT please let us know. Thanking you in advance

Eddy Current.

Oops! I thought you were interested in the ID pitting. Then again, if the tubes are clean, I'm sure a coil can be designed and fabricated for your situation as well. So, eddy current is still my suggestion.

Remote field eddy current testing will detect OD pits and/or OD wastage.
