I am wondering if any one went from engineering to research and then transitioned back to engineering? Did you have any issues in getting back into engineering.

I currently work for an engineering firm and have around 10 years of experience in my area. I have an opportunity to work for one of the leading, non profit, research & development institution as a research manager/lead. I am wondering if I would have hard time transitioning back into engineering in future, if I plan to?

Would you be involved in the actual research or mainly managing the research as a project manager? if you are involved in research & development then you shouldn't have any problem getting back into the engineering side of things. If you are mainly managing the research projects as a project manager, you may find it hard getting back into purely engineering roles but that experience may open different avenues for you in management roles.
