Just the new kid on the block trying to get set up. I'm going to get a laptop so I have the mobility to work anywhere. The question is what model, how much memory, how many mhz, how much bus speed etc. is needed to run autocad well? I'm going to be layering, using 3D fields etc. Is there a perfect laptop out there? I appreciate any advice.

depends whats ur budget
if money is not a problem go for the top of the line 1ghz at least 128 megs of ram preferably win 2k cd/3.5 floppy all in 1 check battery life better than 6 hours is good i would also look at display size 15" would be ok. and depending on other situations you might need a NIC card and or some way to transfer files from the laptop to a workstation also if you plan on putting your files on cd you would need a CD writter

best to look at HP Omni books or sony or gateway if everyone helps everybody the world will be a better place

I want to do a drop down menu that allows different drawings to be opened. I have gotten to the point were I get a command line asking for what drawing do I want, but having trouble getting the program to open drawing without typing in a name. Dose anybody have and idea on how to write a command that will go ahead and open drawing from the mns.

I have a laptop that I use AutoCAD on - it's nothing too fancy but it works good. It's a Compaq (I know - yuck) 1.3 GHz (I think the .3 is right). It has 256KB RAM and hot swap drives - 3.5 and a CDW and DVD combo. I think it's a compaq presario 1700. I haven't run into any issues with CAD so far. Hope this helps...
