Nozzle reinforcement calcuation 1

Hi Experts,

I'm a beginner in Pressure vessel design and obviously to asme sec VIII div 1 code.

I have few questions regarding the nozzle reinforcement calculations this is just for my understanding of the code

1. Shell ID= 55 inch
2. Nozzle Dia =30 inch Location: on the Shell
3. Nozzle Dia =30 inch Location: on the head

obviously, 1.& 2. will exceed UG-36(b)(1) requirement and for reinforcement calculation it will consider both UG-37 and App 1-7 as the nozzle is on the shell.

how about 1.& 3. for the reinforcement calculation will clause to be consider, as the nozzle is located on the head.??

Please shed some light.

See UG-36(b)(1): "... The rules in UG-36 through UG-43 apply to openings not exceeding the following: for vessels 60 in. (1 500 mm) inside diameter and less, one-half the vessel diameter, but not to exceed 20 in... [highlight #FCE94F]For openings exceeding these limits, supplemental rules of 1-7 shall be satisfied in addition to the rules of this paragraph.[/highlight] Alternatively, openings in cylindrical or conical shells exceeding these limits may be designed for internal pressure using the rules of 1-10 [see (c)(2)(-d)]."

Note that 1-10 is only for openings under internal pressure in cylindrical and conical shells. So for (1) and (2) you could use 1-7 or 1-10 but for (1) and (3) you would only be able to use 1-7.

See UG-36(b)(2) for size limits for nozzles located in heads. There aren't any.

Thanks for the correction TomBarsh. My mistake, you must use UG-37 for heads, not 1-7. Hopefully the title of 1-7 was enough of a heads up of my mistake... "1-7 Large Openings in Cylindrical and Conical Shells."
