we will be adding 2-4" nozzle to a vessel head ,head thickness 3/8" , schedule 40 SA 240 316L nozzles , vessel operates @ 40 psi , 300 F with full vac. looking at UW-3 these would be D type joints , the weld joint will be UW 16.1 detail d (full penetration ) based on UW 11 & 12 " Extent of radiographic is NA , the customer thinks maybe RT , we offered visual PT root, interpass , and cap .comments

RT can be done but it is difficult to evaluate.

Regards

I think I posed the question incorrectly we do not think RT is a code requirement for this joint , its the customer who is asking and we're saying no by referencing the code , I guess I'm looking for some conformation that I'm interpreting the code correctly. I've been around RT for years and your correct these would be difficult images to read , as well a time consuming and costly

I'm trying to keep it simple.
The NA for the D category joint (corner joint) is to define the efficiency of the E joint.
You can do UT for the corner joint. Block calibration is difficult and not useful for this example.
The PT is not a volumetric test.
Please see table UW-12

While what you propose is superior to the RT request by the purchaser, you could still RT the weld but you should state that its evaluation cannot fully meet Code requirements due to the geometry.
