I have been going over the Appendix 1-7(b) Calculations for large openings in cylinders. I was able to rederive the membrane stress equations;however, I am unable to rederive the bending moment equation. It is important that I can do this. I would appreciate any help.

"I feel your pain" ;)

Look in the Transactions:
W.L. McBride & W.S. Jacobs, "Design of Radial Nozzles in Cylindrical Shells for Internal Pressure," Transactions of the ASME, Journal of Pressure Vessel Technology, Vol. 102 Feb. 1980, pp70-78.

That's where it came from. Look in the references to that article if you have to dig deeper.

Also:
N.C. Lind, "Approximate Stress Concentration Analysis for Pressurized Branch Pipe Connections," in Pressure Vessels & Piping: Design & Analysis A Decade of Progress, Vol. 2: "Components & Structural Dynamics" (NY:ASME) 1972pp951-958. [a big fat ASME Book]

Your local Engrg College Library should have these

arto,

Thankyou very much for your help.

All the current and good software on PV design have the calculations done for you. You may try COMPRESS for the purpose and gives you all the calculation process in the reports so generated for the design of large openings in the vessels as per the ASME Sec VIII Code App. 1-7
