Good day to all,
What is criteria to select number of risers in shopping mall(Ordinary Hazard Group2), we've a shopping mall who has two floors. The area of the shopping mall is 75,000 sq.ft. on each floor.According to NFPA 13 we can use 2 risers to cover this area on ground floor, does we need another two risers for first floor, or we can extend these two risers(for ground floor) to cover first floor also.
Is this case different from High rise building?
( For example If in high rise building we've area of 20,000 sq. ft. on each floor and we've 15 floors, then we can use single riser to feed the sprinklers on each floor)

Thanks.

Read up. Things have been somewhat clarified. Also, terms need to be clarified. In the first example, a single control valve could serve up to 52k sq ft on the first floor and an additional 52k sq ft on the second floor. So, you could get by with 2 control valve for the project. I wouldn't call it ideal. Also, check your building code about covered malls. There are specific criteria for that.

2nd example of high rise: Much different. You are going to have standpipes. You will need a floor control assembly for each floor. You can have a single standpipe run vertically and then do the floor control assembly on each floor.

FYI - I prefer the term control valve assembly (control valve, tamper switch, flow switch, check valve, gauge kit and test-n-drain) when referring to systems. The term riser seems to have many different meanings across different disciplines.

So regarding shopping mall, can we use only 2 risers for ground floors and for first floor we can extend pipes from these two risers and use control valves to cover first floor area?

And on a true mall, do the anchor stores still have their own risers??

I've never seen an anchor store without a separate system. I always just assumed they were separate "buildings."

You can feed them however you want as long as limit the area of coverage to less than 52k sq ft per floor since you have a 2 story - strictly per NFPA. Building code may differ in mall application. Do your homework to reference the appropriate code/standard.

Personally, I wouldn't just have two control assemblies. Malls change tenants way too often. You want to be able to fix that a lot easier.

Inside mall, there will be separate control valve (gate vale with tamper switch) for each shop.

I need answer according to NFPA or standard practice. Thanks

Post a complete floor plan with dimensions

Look at system area limitations for Ordinary hazard. That will give you your answers. Its pretty straightforward if you aren't worrying about any possible building code that may over-ride NFPA 13 criteria.

If you don't have a copy of the NFPA standards, they can be accessed for free in a read-only format on NFPA's website.
