I am trying to create a 2D layout of an assembly. I run into problems when I want features and hardware that are not at TOP DEAD CENTER or BOTTOM DEAD CENTER to show up. For example, a bolt may not be positioned at TPC but I need to have it represented in the 2D layout. I do not want to create a dummy bolt at TPC since my part count will be inaccurate.

Does anyone have any great ideas...I'll settle for ideas period at this point. My desk cant handle many more hits from my head.

Thanks

Your best bet may still be to add that extra bolt, but there is a way to keep it from messing up your Parts List. What you do is add an attribute to the component (not the part file itself but the actual extra component that you just added) by selecting it in the Assembly Navigator, pressing MB3, selecting Properties and then selecting the Attributes tab. Now add an attribute with the following name...

PLIST_IGNORE_MEMBER

Note that you don't have to set it equal to any value since just having the attribute there is good enough. Now when you update your Parts List, this particular component will not be included.

Jaydenn...isnt the revolve section only in the "drafting" mode? Will that show up in "modeling"? I want the bolt xsect to show up at TDC even though there isnt a bolt at TDC. We have tried revolving the xsect of the bolt and then taking another xsect at TDC but this only works if u use the bolt at only one radial position. Since the same bolt will be used at a couple different flanges...having an xsect at a radial position of say 5" does you no good if u need them again at 6".

John...im gonna give that a shot. Ive never tried to add an attribute.

Thank you both.

Thanks for your help again. This does not fix my problem however as the new bolt is not parametric. The other concern that i had was that down the road...someone would use my model and i wouldnt be around...how would they know what that bolt was for.

I assumed UG would have some kind of model cross section view (other than revolved sections since this is a component not a feature). Ive been told Pro/e has a pretty strong 2d layout capabilities...i was hoping there was a magic button i did not know about.

regards.

How about assembly arrangements? You could have an arrangement for TDC, BDC, any any position in between. It would not require dummy components or setting attributes.

cowski!!!

how do i work that!?!? I think thats the golden egg i was waiting for!!

I'm not familiar with NX4, so I will refer you to the help files or others on the forum that know NX4 arrangements. I know they are possible starting with NX2 but were a bit tricky to set up. They are fairly painless in NX6.

Since no one else is jumping in here, I'll give an overview. The specifics may be a little different for NX4, but this will give you the basic steps.

You may also want to take a look at these threads:

In Assembly Navigator: right click the top level assembly -> Arrangements -> edit... There will probably only be one arrangement available at this point (the system created default). Copy the existing arrangement, give it a meaningful name, and make it the current arrangement (double click it). In the assembly navigator choose the component(s) that you want to move, right click to bring up the component properties dialog and choose the parameters page, you should find an arrangement option for 'individually positioned' or 'same position in all' - make sure it is set to 'individually positioned'. For our assemblies the components are built 'in position' so I can't give you much direction on overriding mating conditions in the arrangement other than to say I know it can be done. Now reposition the components to the arragement specific position.

Create more arrangements as necessary and now you will be able to right click the top level assembly and choose which arrangement you wish to use.
