NX 7.5 Linking Part with Children using WAVE

Hi I have a problem with creating a WAVE link of a very simple casting mold (contain two child part). Going into the assembly navigator tab, I right click on my top parent part and select WAVE "Create Linked Part". The dialog box that open ask me to enter my part name and I click on "Specify Part Name". I proceed to give this part a name and hit OK. But when I do this, my new part just show my datum coordinate axis and no Part at all. I can do this method very easily with a single part (no children and mates) and I get what I want. What am I doing wrong? Anyone care to give me a good answer? Thank you.

Are you doing this from the Modeling module? If I select an item in the Assembly Navigator while in Modeling and I press MB3, I do NOT get any WAVE options.

John, first RMB in the Assembly navigator - Wave Mode
Then RMB on the node - Wave - Create linked part.


The create linked part will create a linked part of the selected part, inside the linked part there will be the objects ( solids/sheets etc but not components) defined by the reference set in the parent part. If the selected part is an assembly it does normally not contain any objects that can be linked.
example use, Model the left rear view mirror in one part and place the relevant objects in the model reference set, then "create linked part" and you get a completely separate part file that contains all the bodies that's contained in the model reference set. ( -Then mirror & suppress etc etc in the linked part.) The two parts , left and right, can later be added to a higher level assembly. There is no common assembly reference between them.

After playing around with NX, it turns out that the WAVE feature can only be use on a part file with one component. Adding multiple components to the same file, makes creating a WAVE link impossible. Unless I export the casting mold as a dummy solid ONE part and reopen in NX, there isn't a way to create a wave link that would update the entire assembly/part file.

This OPTION only allows ONE component.
Can you provide some schematic on what it is you intend to accomplish ?
I guess that the "Create Linked Part" is not at all what you should use for this purpose, if, what i guess is the intention is true.
As stated, "Create Linked Part" will create a 100% copy of a single part.
and the content is one of more linked objects. There will be no common assembly between the original and the copy. Two separate parts, one master and one associative copy.
For the most everyday purposes the "Wave Geometry Linker" is the better choice, it will link almost anything into the current work part and the work part can be any part within the assembly.
I.e create an assembly structure and then link the geometry as you wish.
- Or, use the "Promote Body" which only allows "upward links", but, it will hide the original body.
