NX 7.5 Wavelink Creating new parts 3

I have the following parts modeled in NX

1. PRT file with Raw material cast iron with a master drafting drawing.

2. PRT file with wave link back to File 1 cast iron with machining subtract cut features to the wave link solid body of the cast iron part with a master drafting drawing.

3. PRT file assembly which I used for the Wavelink that contains parts 1 and 2.

Now I want new items of all files and to keep my Wavelinks and drawings attached in the new files like they where in the original file.
I want the wave link to be with the new cast iron raw material to the new cast iron machining.

We are using teamcenter.

What is the proper steps or did I mess this entire process up? Do I have to delete the Wavelinks and recreate them?

Is there a better process?

If you're attempting to show a progression where a casting turns into a finish machined part, your best approach may be using 'Promotions' instead of WAVE-linked bodies. You may find the behavior easier to manage.

Fully open all 3 files. Perform a save-as on file 2 (the wave linked part), it will also ask for a new file name for the assembly - supply one and press OK. Switch to file 1 and do a save-as, this time hit Cancel when it prompts for new assembly name. Save the new parts then check the wave link to make sure it references the correct parent part.

When you do the save-as, TC should ask you if you want a new revision, item, etc.

Thanks I will look into Promotions. I have done some searching on promotions on this site. But I saw nothing on keeping these associations while creating new parts from original parts.

If you do a search of this forum using the keyword "promotions", you will find many threads where this topic has been hashed-out before. Granted, you may have to still separate some of the 'chafe' from the 'wheat', but I suspect that you will find much that will help you:

Is this not what assembly clone is for?
When we have a design and want to use it as a starting point for a new design we use clone assembly.
