It appears that "groups" and "user expressions" have been eliminated from the part navigator top nodes in NX 8.5. I took a quick look at customization and preferences and didn't see an obvious way to get them back. Are they gone for good?

Until you've actually opened or created a part file with 'User-defined Expressions' or 'Groups' ('Measurements' are included in this behavior), these 'nodes' are not shown. Just open a part file that has these items or add them to your current part file and then check the Part Navigator. BTW, this has pretty much always worked this way, just that you may not have noticed it before because during a session, once you DO open a part file with contains a 'User-defined Expression' or a 'Group' or a 'Meaurement' and you either close that part or open one that doesn't have any of these items, the nodes will remain, just showing that they're empty, unless you explicitly remove them by changing their filter status.,

I posted after doing some work on a new file and setting up a feature "suppression expression". I created (Edit -> feature -> suppress by expression) and renamed the expression and expected it to show up in the top nodes, but nothing. I was expecting it to show up as a 'user' expression at that point; but in retrospect, it is still really a system expression. The nodes have started to appear since I have done more with the file.

Thanks John, good info as always.

Yes, if you want an Expression which will be seen as a 'User Exporession' outside of the expression dialog itself, that expression MUST be created explicitly by the users and NOT by the system while creating a feature or in your case, setting-up a suppres-by-expression scheme.
