Hi Guys,
I am trying to machine a pocket on a part which has one side open to the outside of the part. I would like to use a trochoidal path to remove this material. This operation works great inside the part (all walls closed) but not with one wall open. How can I do this?
I have no problem using a planar profile operation but this restricts my toolpath options to greatly... (no trochoidal, no finish pass)

Any suggestions or help greatly appreciated.

using NX10

many thanks,
James

Hello James,
Trochoidal cavity milling a pocket with an open wall should work just fine. Can you post an image of what you are doing? An example prt file would be better.

Hi Tingsryd,
I will try to post an image. I found that if I do a floor wall operation but don't select a floor it works almost perfectly. My only problem is that a little bit of material is left just where the tool enters the open pocket but only on the entry point. The exit point is fine, no material left on the wall.
Any idea how I would control that?

thanks,
james

Tingsryd,
cavity milling works perfectly as suggested.....

thanks,
james

If you're satisfied using cavity milling then great but floor-wall should work nicely on prismatic parts.

If you would like to look at the floor-wall operation more let us know. It's difficult to say if the issue is a setting or just glitching without seeing the part.
