Hi Guys,
stupid question but I have a simple operation to perform in the milling machine and was wondering what the standard way to do it was. I have a steel disc and and want to remove 1mm off the top surface (facing op to clean it up from the saw) so it is ready for the next op on a different machine. How do I do this? I wanted to set the blank and add 1mm to the height then simply run a floor wall op to remove the unwanted material. When I touch off in the machine I am always cutting my 1mm of material thickness in air. I can of course cheat and fiddle with my Z offset but this seems a bit silly, likewise the mcs...

Can someone enlighten me?

many thanks,
James

Where are you setting the Z on the machine. And what is the Z output from the post?
Make sure there is not a ZOFF offset on the tool - look at the tool offsets on the tool dialog and the tool output on the milling operation.

If your setting Z origin at the machine at the top of the stock then your Z output will need to be Z-1.0 - yes move the MCS to accommodate.

Hi John,
many thanks for the answer, I can make the MCS tie up with what I want to do, all tool offsets are fine. I am setting Z on the machine and this should match with the MCS in NX. I was hoping there was some way I could use the top of the blank and have NX automatically know I want to remove the difference between that and the part top surface but this is not the case?

many thanks,
James

Are you using the auto blank or offset from part to define the stock?

If you want NX to know what the tool depth is from the top of the "Real" stock then you will need to define a stock model that represents the actual material your working with.
Then you can set the Z0.0 at the top of the part. Or simply set the MCS Origin 1mm above the part it's up to you
