I was wondering if any one knows the requirement of design for existing buildings that would be adding new floors. My understanding is the IBC code requires buildings to be designed based on the most recent code if the added load on the existing building exceeds 10%. What does NYC building code 2008 require?
Thanks

If you are regularly doing work in NY or NYC, you really need to order a copy of the code anyway. Seems like this code would be one of your basic engineering research books.

When you get it, research that question. :)

I know that and I have the code. The question is if any ones knows where and if at all this issue is discussed in the code in chapter 16 (or anywhere else).

It is discussed in the existing building code of NY. I don't know if NYC has an existing building code that is any different, but generally if its just called 'building code' it is refering to new construction.
