I would like to know why you would pick one over the other.

Here is what I've found out so far:

Square is better than O-ring in static applications. (Good high pressure seal)
Quad is better than O-ring in dynamic applications. (Less pressure required, anti rolling)
Each ring seems to be better than a flat gasket (Less pressure required)

Now aside from cost, is there really a reason to use the traditional O-ring or gasket still?
Given same material/hardness/seal application/etc unless there is a valid difference on selection between one ring or the other.

Perhaps a description and example applications would be useful.

If enough people respond I will start adding their input to this post to keep as much information as possible at the top of the thread.

Wait, what? They have the internet on computers now?!?

Actually I forgot that you can't edit your own post >.<
If there's a fair number of responses I'll just write a new thread with the useful info and flag this one to be removed.

Anyway here have been a few helpful websites, manuals and calculators:
Quad
Square
Calculators
(haven't gotten this one to work)
(includes phone app calculators)

Wait, what? They have the internet on computers now?!?

I think you need to describe your application. You cannot generalise like that. Can you send a drawing for people to make an informed decision in putting together a response?

Sorry for the vague question it's really more for applications in the future. I'm a younger engineer (actually EIT) working with a company that makes pumps. As I'm looking into o-rings for different applications I keep coming up on how square is better on one end of the spectrum of applications and quad is better on the other end, but not much on where o-rings are better other than maybe pricing and some sizing. For a longer running application, is it still work considering just a standard o-ring?

Wait, what? They have the internet on computers now?!?

Not sure which pumps you are manufacturing but all the pumps I have worked on have always used ORings. On the other hand ORings are readily available and they work well. I do not know what sq section availability is but my advice is to stick with std BS orings.

Cheers
