I am the I&E Engineer for a company that provides skid mounted equipment for the pipeline industry. Usually all our work is land-based but today I have a new project, a 30" pig receiver, which is going onto an offshore platform. The project involves solenoids and limit switches for 5 different valves terminating at a j-box on the skid edge. What is the generally accepted way to handle the conduit for an offshore platform application? What type of conduit and fittings, what type of junction box? Area classification in Class 1 Div 2., the product is natural gas.

Contact the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS AMERICAS) in Houston and ask to speak to the group that handles classification rules for offshore structures and MODU's. You can find the contact info at It is highly likely the rig is classed, and needs this item approved.
