Offshore Nitrogen Supply

Greetings,

Onshore, it is a common practice to have an non permanent external source of nitrogen (HP cilynders or liquid vaporization) for exceptional high and infrequent consumptions - such as plant turnaround.

Is it possible to have a similar philosophy offshore? How does it works?

along the Gulf coast of the US, there is a pipeline network of pure N2 that connects to most plants. For turn arounds, large trucks are brought in that have liquid N2 with pumps and vaporizers to supply large amounts at once. We also use larger tanks that held several thousand gallons of liq N2. The boil off was used as instrument gas.

You can also get PSA system to make 99+% purity N2 from a cpmpresed air system.

I'm quite aware of that practice in onshore installations, my doubt is if we can do it and how do we do it offshore.

In my (limited) experience of offshore plant shutdowns (the first thing that happens in a offshore shutdown is the drill crew are sent home!), dedicated nitrogen generators are usually brought in for purging and so on. Google "offshore nitrogen generators" or similar and see what you get.

How much N2 do you need offshore?
DNV offshore 2,000 and 5,000 gal ISO tanks are very common for offshore usage.
Just bring a Zone II converter and you are good to go.

What rate do you need? At what purity? What total volume? We use membrane N2 offshore - our units are up to 3000 scfm at 95% purity (reduced rates at higher purity up to 99%). If you need a large total volume, it may be better logistically and cost wise than bringing in lots of cylinders.
