OIl pick up in a sump

Hi guys,

Here is a question about oil pick up pipes in the sump of a motorbike. I am using an engine out of a motorbike in a road going car and one of the problems with doing that is the problem with oil surge when cornering hard. In a motorbike this is not a problem as the engine leans but in a car chassis the oil will surge across the sump and in extreme cases the oil pick up will be out of oil and can cause problems and eventual damage.

Now, the usual technique for curing this problem is to fit a dry sump kit but at £2000+ its expensive. So I was wondering if there was another way of getting around the problem. And this is where you guys come in. The obvious choice is to baffle the sump. But, I had an idea. If I alter the oil pick up pipe so that instead of it drawing oil from the top of the sump through a downward facing filter it draws oil through the bottom of the sump through an upward facing filter would this work?

The oil pump would not be raising oil any higher but if the pick up is place in the bottom of a cylinder mounted in the bottom of the sump it should, in theory, have a better source of oil to pick up during hard cornering.

Now is this a viable idea, or is it a stupid idea and I should get out more

Too bad you didn't use a dry-sumped bike as a donor.

Baffle the sump, and/or make it deeper.

Or, mount the engine on a pendulum.

If you have room to plumb from the bottom, then you may have room to add some sump capacity down there as well. Another possibility is that if you can add below you might be able to subtract, or block off, capacity above.

There used to be aftermarket add-on sumps for the old air-cooled VW's.
