I see this is very good thread and hope to resume it.

I am very interested in this topic. UF and walnut filters were mentioned for oil/water separation in this thread,but actually I think they are very limited for using in oilfield, because the two equipment is easy to be plugged.

Hi,mbeychok,

Thanks for the information. The two links are very useful for oily water treatment. However, API separator just can do primary oil/water separation and it can not remove oil down to 10 or 20 ppm as a lot of oilfields require. For my understanding, the difficulty of oil/water separation is to treat very tight emulsion and reach a few ppm(OIW)result, which is the challenging situation for a lot of oilfields now.

Oil-water separation is not an issue of technology. The practical aspects of oil-water separation are firmly established and have been known for years. The initial research into oil-water separation began over 50 years ago.

Even the new technologies’ such as membrane treatment are not exactly "new" since membranes were initially commercialized in the 1970's.

Discharge permit requirements have also been known for years.

At this time, the path forward for corporations is that resources must be earmarked to achieve the desired environmental goals. At the present time, most environmental issues may be resolved with adequate funding, not technology.
