Old Column Size

I have existing building plans, and a column schedule that lists diameters.

A note at the bottom of the column schedule reads "All cols. are conc. filled H.W. steel pipe columns.".

Does anyone know what H.W. steel pipe columns are, and have any information on them? Drawings are dated 1956.

Heavy wall

Google must be broken, as I tried the same thing and came up with nothing. Now, I tried to find the wall thickness, with still no luck.

An associate has the AISC 5th Edition, and he said there was no mention of heavy wall steel pipe. The pipe listed are standard, extra strong, and double extra strong.

Does anyone have a guess as to what the wall thickness of heavy wall steel pipe might be?

Then again, the design also says "concrete filled", so maybe the original designer just used some concrete filled well casings for his/her columns.

Pipe is designated by schedule except that Sch. 40 is also designated "Std." and schedule 80 is designated "H" or "E".

You may want to use a 1/2" dia 'hole' drill... the type with the bimetal serrated teeth... and cut a small sample if critical. Careful when you hit the concrete... this may ruin the drill... I often use this approach for drilling steel... easier and faster than using a regular bit...
