Recently had an issue with a legacy Ideas NX5 PC our design team hadn't upgraded to latest version & have not exported drawings from it etc.

The machine finally died, surprisingly. so I have been tasked with VM'ing it.

I have a Windows XP VM of the machine using vmware player with the same mac address in the settings as I think it's MAC address filtered.

It opens to the point where you pick up your drawing template & then click okay, it opens the program but then gives an internal security error -92

The VM is a direct P2V of the physical machine

Any ideas? Literally :)

Hi Mattias,

The License server was on the same machine too :)

Hi Tom!

If I understand correctly, you moved everything to a new VM that uses the original MAC?

Unfortunately, that is not going to work as you are trying it.

The FlexLM server does not rely just on the MAC ID. It uses the Composite ID (CID), which is unique, even for VM's.

The old days where FlexLM used just the MAC presented problems because anyone can spoof/duplicate the same MAC on a VM (as you did), which would allow anyone to re-use as many copies of a license as they want. To prevent that, FlexLM used to complain when trying to run it on any VM, so we could not support VM's.

So a big benefit fo the CID method is that VM's are now supported as license servers since even VM's now have unique CID's.

So bottom line for your case, is you are going to have to contact Siemens and request your license file be moved to a new CID. You can download the EXE tool that generates the CID for our hardware (physical or VM) from GTAC.

If your guys still need to access I-deas, my recommendation would be to move to a newer version so you are more future proof. For example, last year's Release, I=deas 6.6 was the first to be certified on Win 10 (most of the remaining I-deas usage is really about "long-term archive" scenarios, and wanting to get rid of old Win XP or old UNIX machines as they cannot rely on them being available in the long-term, as you learned the hard way).

Hope that helps!
