OMC sterndrive gear trouble

I have a boat with a OMC sterndrive. I have gone through 3 sets of gears and have heard of many other similar nightmares with OMC's. I heard they can convert to Volvo Penta. Does anyone have info on this or any other solutions to my problem?

I heard the same thing around the marina but have never checked it out. I'll ask around this weekend, we are supposed to work on a Gray Marine Engine and have a fish fry, maybe a beer.

What model and year is this omc drive leg?
The newer models can be changed over to a volvo leg useing a transom shield adaptor plate supplyed by Volvo.
If it is one of the older models (a large rubber gasket on the transom cut out)than im afraid you are out of luck.
Am curious as to why three gear failures. Is it possable the drive leg gear ratio is not approiate for the application?
