Hello ,
...Does anyone know anything about one way lutches ?
I am designing this mechanism where I have to have a bearing type mechanism or a wheel in a groove mechanism that slides in it in a one way clutch fashion. Does anyone know any mechanisms that operate in such a fashion?
Please help ...Thanks a lot .

Yes, we examined problems related to such a clutch some years ago. They were used in emergency power installations, and functioned as a clutch while speeding up the diesel to operating speed, and as a bearing when diesel speed matched generator speed.
These failures where the results of torsional vibratons and slicht overload. Apart fromt that, these clutches worked well.

There a several manufacturers of one way clutches, bearings and other devices. What is the application you have?

PTTech makes one way devices for switching to diesel when power fails on large mills. Falk does rollbacks for large conveyors. If it is small you can use one way “starter bearings”.

Is this a 1000 hp job or a 1/10 hp job?

Thank You Barry so much. I am designing this device where a mechanism has to move in a groove (metal) in a form of a wheel driven by an outside attachment and it needs to moove in that groove in that one way clutch fashion where I can have unrestricted motion in one direction and somewhat restricted motion in the other direction with an ability to add load/resistance to it and change directions.
Is that something attainable ?

A German tape recorder aroung 1960 used a spiral spring on a shaft.

One end of the spring is connected to a pulley which
is free running on the shaft, the other end of the spring is unconnected.

If the shaft rotates one way, the spring tighten on it and
the friction is increasing. The other way the it is decresing to the point where the the shapt is practically independent from the pulley.

There are several ways to do what you want. The best way depends on the specifics of your application.

What is the speed?
What is the torque in both directions?
What is the size?
What environment?
What resolution of resistance is required?
What is duty cycle?
What is general device layout?

Barry are you a mechanical engineer located in LA area , I would like to get in touch with you ? Thanks a lot man

Thanks a bunch Barry , since I can't post any form of contact info on here according to the rules of this forum I will inform you on what the specs of the concept are.
I would love to get in touch with you .
Cheers

To answer that question, you will need a lot more information. INA & Torrington manufacture needle clutch bearings for light loads. Morse, Steiber & GMN offer one-way ball cltch bearings. For larger applications, there are many specialized clutch companies.
