What is the proper way to measure the voltage in a water filled steel tank with a [Cu 1/2 cell]. The tank has severe corrosion and pitting. I want to add a magnesium anode to help slow or stop the corrosion. I would like to measure the potential before and after.

My asumptions are:
The [Cu 1/2 cell] placed at the water surface.
+ meter lead to the top of the [Cu 1/2 cell].
- meter lead to the tank wall.
The voltage should be > (-0.8) volts. after the anode(s) are applied.

Will the anode slow or stop the corrosion?

I believe you have your good reasons for setting up an active corrosion protection system, or that you cannot easily empty the tank and treat it.

But did you think of coating the interior with a proper metallic or organic system to protect the mild steel from corroding?

Can you put inhibitors in the water?

I am not an expert in corrosion protection but I have a hunch that it might be difficult to get a uniform potential all over the tank surface.

A corrosion lining may be the best bet to stop corrosion. andoes are costly and need to be replaced to ensure proper protection. Lining materials are long lasting and offer better mileage rfernley@triflow.ca
