Open I-DEAS parts in NX 7.5 from the TDM using open i-deas

Hello,

In fact I don't know where to put this thread in NX, or I-DEAS forum. So decided to post it here. I'm a longtime I-DEAS user and know I'm working also with NX 7.5. I discovered a feature in NX 7.5 that allows you to open I-DEAS parts from the TDM if I-DEAS is running in the same workstation. In your computer environment variables you need to put a command "UGII_INOP_SERVER_HOST" "my pc name and HOST (I can get the "HOST") to activate and order in NX 7.5. Then start I-DEAS, after that start NX 7.5 and in NX 7.5 you should be able to download parts from I-DEAS TDM. It sounds very nice and useful but I've a problem.

As you can see I get it working only in part, NX 7.5 detects my team but can read the projects in it.

I should post it at GTAC forums but now my company webkeys are only used by IT that is outsourced and my GTAC user has expired.

Thanks a lot,

Marc.

I can't help you directly since I personally have NO exprience using I-DEAS with or without linking it to NX. Now that being said, I would suggest that you post this in the NX forum as well. Now it is true the powers-to-be at Eng-Tips frowns on double-posting, but I think in this case it's justified as there are probably more people who have actually been involved in transitioning from I-DEAS to NX following that forum than this one.

As for your issue with respect to getting help from GTAC, my advice is to call them directly and see if they can help you over the phone. Even if your official support has been outsourced I suspect that you might still be able to get help via the phone if you explain your situation to them.

I think you must have the CMM-tool(migration tool) installed on your workstation.

NX5 -> NX8.5
I-deas 12, NX I-deas6.3
Solid Works 2009 and 2012

Hello matnas,

There is any way to know if CMM-tool is installed? Maybe I've to ask to IT to install it.

Thanks

The CMM tool is commonly used with Teamcenter to migrate I-Deas data that has been migrated to teamcenter from I-Deas. If you are still on the I-Deas TDM you can use the CMM to do native translation of I-deas parts, assemblies and drawings to NX. I do believe you have to export out of your TDM package files. So at this point you have no relations between your NX and I-Deas TDM data. Have you migrated out of the I-Deas TDM to teamcenter? ALso what is your overall goal of getting parts into NX?

Hello,

I know that with Teamcenter I can migrate I-DEAS data to NX, but what I'm trying to do is do it without Teamcenter. According to the explanation of the NX command you can open I-DEAS parts from your TDM into NX without using Teamcenter. So the CMM tool works only with Teamcenter? I'm not sure about that.

Regards,

Marc.

The cmm tool can communicate or transfer I_Deas date to NX to native format to the Network. What I do not know is that if CMM can be launched outside of a teamcenter? I do not know if you can get it as a standalone without having teamcenter. I saw that same thing you are talking about in the NX menus a couple days ago. It was kind of interesting.

First, I would recommend that you also post your quesitons to PLM World. You can join for free and they have forums that Siemens people monitor. And I would agree that you can call GTAC directly and they would probably help you.

You can use the interoperate command under the File menu to export from TDM and it will create either an NX part or a parasolid that you can open in NX. I believe that the part history is lost. But the assembly configuration and the assembly constraints are maintained.

Thanks a lot Helrezer, I'll try to visit PLM World.

In the other hand I know the option to use interoperate, in fact I use it nearly everyday and that's the reason to look for a faster way using the option to open a file directly from TDM, without the need to export using .xpk or parasolid part. In my experience it takes a long time to translate an assembly from the TDM to xpk (exchange file to open I-DEAS to NX) so I was looking for an alternative method.

Thanks,

Hi Marc,

Maybe we can help us together

I have to precise that I am a NX expert and not an Ideas expert.

I explain my problem:
I have installed Ideas V12 NX on my laptop to be able to read the a Database Ideas Unix V8 from my customer.

The SCSI disk from my customer is corrupted, I have found a company which is able to repair it and give to me the data under a windows disk

I need to test before spending some money to repair the disk

1°) Are you using IDEAS on IRIX system ? If yes, could you send me some examples 3D, ASSY and associated drawings for my test Under Windows XP ?

2°) I would like to try the option File / Open Ideas files but this option doesn't appear on my NX7.5
So, could you be more precise with the variable UGII_INOP_SERVER_HOST ?
and what's the purpose of the other variable UGII_INOP_IDEAS_GATEWAY_DIR ?

Thanks in advance

Hello Didier,

1) Sorry, I'm not using I-DEAS under IRIX. But I'm nearly sure that you should read the information in WINDOWS, but your TEAM (I-DEAS database) should be defined as a heterogenous one (a word to say that the TEAM can be used by UNIX and Windows clients).

2)Well the first one is the HOSTID of you PC, is like yours PC's name. If you don't create the variable in you Pc the Open I-DEAS order doesn't appear in NX 7.5. I'm not really sure about the other variable... sorry.

Regards,

Marc.

Hi Marc,

After setting the variable, I was able to find "File/Open Ideas" but I have the following message:

Unable to connect to I-DEAS Server (I was running Ideas then NX7.5)

Any Idea ?

TIA

Hi All,

The setup is described in the I-deas documentation. Just search for the variable.
I have set this up previously and lauched using a userprof.prg as recommended. I'm not sure if the setup requires a paired environment ie NX-I-deas6.3 = NX8.5
