Hello, I'm not really a bearing guy, but I'm looking for what I can best describe as an open top bearing.

I have a large shaft that I want to support some heavy rolls, but still be able to rotate freely. I want to be able to lift the shaft up out of the bearing (so perpendicular to the shaft's axis), instead of pushing it through. Is there a type of bearing configuration that allows this?

Any help is greatly appreciated. So far internet searches have turned up nil, but I think I just don't know what to look for.

Ah, if this further clarifies, what I'm looking for would basically be a cylindrical roller bearing, but with the top half of it cut off.

However if something like this doesn't exist, I would appreciate any guidance on solutions for dropping bars into place and having them be able to roll.

Look up Dodge "Hinged Cap" bearings on their website.

They are made for quick change of rolls.

Other than that, I've seen babbit bearings in paper mills that are basically a "bottom half bearing" that support heavy rolls.
