openings in flat head ASME section VIII div 1

Hello everyone,

I have following doubts in understanding UG39 & UG36 ASME section VIII div 1.

1. UG36 is applicable to flat heads or not. I have this doubt because it seems that UG36 is all about formed heads not about flat head.

2. UG39(a)stated that:"The rules in this paragraph apply to all openings in flat heads except opening(s) that do not exceed the size and spacing limits in UG-36(c) (3) and do not exceed one‐fourth the head diameter or shortest span"

I have doubt that openings in flat heads having diameter less than one‐fourth the head diameter are exempted to reinforcement or code rules are not applicable for such openings & we will look to U2(g). Same doubt about openings not exceeding limits of UG36(c)(3).


3. UG39 is applicable to both unstayed flat head & stayed flat heads or not.

UG-36 is applicable to flat heads.
Openings covered by UG-39(a) as listed are exempt from reinforcement calcs only, other Code rules (weld sizing etc.) apply.
