I need papers relative to optimal capacitor placement using sensitivity factors from newtow raphson jacobian matrix. If somebody can help me, or can explain me how this method works?

Thank you.

I think the old Westinghouse 1/3 rule is pretty much good enough for most applications -saves a lot of calcs that may not give you a very different answer.

Using the Jacobian is going to make you very dependant on the accuracy of your load models, time of day, season etc. You start getting into the whole '"probabilistic load flow" thing, so about the best you will get is a whole bunch of Jacobians for different loading conditions, and it comes down to looking for differences so you can optimise placement not just for one condition, but across them all.

And then System Ops goes and re-configures the feeder on you...

I tend to agree with Bung that fancy optimization techniques are seldom warranted. I generally manually place capacitors in likely locations using the 1/3 rule if applicable and calculate the losses with a load flow program. Then move them to see if there is an improvement. There is very little difference in losses with wide variations of placement.

If you want to use a fancy approach anyway, there have been many papers written. A search on capacitor<and>optimize<and>placement in IEEE Explore yields:

Thank you for your answer. I would like ou comment the 1/3 rule. I really do not know that rule.

Thank you again.
