Optimization of a honeycomb structure

Hello guys

I created a honeycomb structure under blast loads using the Dynamic/Explicit step. But due to Abaqus inability to optimize explicit analysis I had to mirror the blast loads into static loads under Static, General step. The results aren't perfect but it will do. Now if anyone could tell me how to proceed with the optimization I would be grateful.

I want to reduce peak displacement but optimizing the honeycomb core only, the idea behind this is for Abaqus to determine the optimal geometry of the core to resist blast loads.

This question is difficult to answer with the information given. A lot depends on what your Standard analysis looks like. Have you modeled the hexagon shape of the honeycomb structure, are they shell elements with laminate properties? I would look into Isight for former and Tosca for the latter. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the response rstupplebeen. Yes, I modeled the hexagon shape in Abaqus but didn't assign a laminate property. Would it be possible to perform the optimization in Abaqus only rather then the software you mentioned? If so any help would be appreciated.

To optimize within Abaqus Python scripting is in your future. Depending on your licenses you may already have access to Isight and Tosca which are both in the Simulia brand. If your token type is Extended (QXP, QXT, QAX)then you may be in luck. This blog post goes over the different license types.

How you optimize will greatly depend on your design variables that you have. Can you change the honeycomb geometry or is it a pre-manufactured part. With more details and some images we will be able to help more.

I hope this helps.

Unfortunately I can only use Abaqus. The honeycomb structure cannot be modified.

This is the picture of the honeycomb core. My objective is be to optimize the cell angle to find the optimal angle that can resist blast loads.

This is the picture of the honeycomb structure where I had to create 14 partitions and applied 14 pressure loads (with amplitude)on each partition to mirror the blast load.

Now is it possible for abaqus to optimize for optimal geometry with the given information. Thanks a lot I appreciate the help.

Abaqus cannot optimize anything, it can only do a sensitivity analysis. You need a separate optimization tool.

As far as I can see, you want to do a parametric optimization of the design variables of the structure. I think Isight, A/CAE (+Python) and A/Explicit should do the job.

Yeah I thought so as well. Thanks guys for your input.
