I am currently using AutoCAD to manually draft shoring drawings. Is there a modeling software that is utilized by geotech engineers to 3D model shoring systems (such as soldier pile and lagging with tiebacks) similar to what Revit offers for structural engineers? I watched some youtube videos on Civil 3D and its tools seem to focus on modeling surfaces, highway alignment, parking, pipe networks. I would like to know if and how Civil 3D was utilized to completely model and output a complete set of design drawings.

The only time where I use 3D modeling is when connections are complicated and an out of the box solution is required, so I'll draw it up in SketchUp to check constructability. Other than that, I agree with PEinc... waste of time and money.

My first choice would be Revit. If you have some mechanical drafters, Solidworks is also an option. Even Microstation (my least favorite).
Common practice in my industry is to use Revit for primary plan, elevation, and section views, and AutoCAD 2D for all the details.
If you are not familiar with and not already using 3D and BIM with trained designers, not advisable.

EngMann, in February 2017 you posted a question about a deep excavation project next to a building. The new building was to be on a 15' thick mat that was expected to settle 2-3 inches. What did you ever do with that project? Any problems? I just did exactly the same type of project. Same project? Can you please send me an email with a phone number so we can talk? We/I use Autocad with Carlson Civil Module to create Excavation "3D Models". This includes excavation surfaces and output to shoring profiles and sections. Any adjacent Utilities can be added to the model. And processed to display in profile and sections. This is utilized to determine or confirm layout of tie-backs or soil-nails. Finished submit-able drawings are then semi-manually completed using the base geometry and annotation generated by Carlson.
