Hello
I want to know if there is a water cooled chiller which can be placed outdoor in a cruel industrial enviroment.. most of the manufacturers i have seen dont have this option and cannot provide any treatments for water cooled chiller to be located outdoor.
So if anyone have seen this feature before ,please inform me.
Thank you

Define "cruel industrial environment". Roof of the Chernobyl reactor, or just dirty?

Whatever that is, if it is dirty, it requires frequent cleaning of the heat sink (wet or dry cooling tower etc.). If freezing is an issue, there are solutions as well. There are many chillers for outdoor.

What do you mean by water cooled chiller?

Do you mean a cooling tower? Or just that you pass water through it instead of air. If so why is it outside?

A cooling tower by definition needs to be outside so your post is not making any sense, neither is the definition of "cruel". If it's that bad no one should be working there.

Remember - More details = better answers
Also: If you get a response it's polite to respond to it.

I mean by cruel industrial enviroment that there is a chlorine gas emissions ,chlorides, sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides. The chillers which can be put outside according to most of the manufacturers is the air cooled chiller as it's designed for this but water cooled chillers normally placed indoor as there is no reason for it to be located outside.

But i am talking about if the water cooled chiller (not cooling tower) can be located outdoor if there is no place to be placed indoor .

Does my question now makes sense ?

Note : I have never seen a catalogue or data book for a water cooled chiller for outdoor installation so advice me if you have seen anything like this .

Water cooled chillers aren't advertised as outdoor because they make little sense to be placed outdoor as you're already aware. Ask if the enclosure and sensors are rated for outdoor - pick your favorite rating; NEMA 4, IP5x/IP6x or whatever is most common for units available to you, and ask if you can have the unit upgraded to that spec if it doesn't already meet it.

If their components and enclosures are outdoor rated you now have a water cooled chiller with an outdoor rating, even if they don't advertise it as an outdoor unit.

The few times I've done an outdoor water cooled it was when plans changed mid-project and the space for the chiller inside was no longer available. I think we changed a couple sensors that had rated versions, mounted a few things in j-boxes when they couldn't be outdoor, and added a window kit to the main control panel to cover the non-rated controllers.

But back to the original intent - air is cheaper and plentiful outside, and designing for site conditions is a one-time charge, instead of the ongoing expense of something like a cooling tower to provide that condenser with cooling water. The chemicals listed would pose an issue, but there may be a coating available to resist corrosion from those items on an air cooled condenser. You can always run the unit more remote and account for added run length by changing pipe size and/or pump head.

Thank you sir for your great support

Why don’t you investigate prefabricated chiller plant (water-cooled). If the cooling capacity is « small » there are solutions available using 20 to 40 foot containers type design. For larger chiller it would be more a custom option but it is available for very large capacities using multiple chillers. Daikin is a manufacturer that offers these plants in USA and Middle-east.

There is already an existing cooling tower ,i see this pre-fabricated chiller plants offering cooling towers on the top of the container .

So please tell me the specifications of the containers used and if i can fabricate one.
( it's material , design , ventilation requirement,..etc)

I think if it's a simple container , it will save costs to find a local manufacturer where he will fabricate this container according to specifications.

Thank you in advance.

Do you not have enough space for an air cooled chiller? Just because tower water is available doesn't mean it is a good idea. I would put in an air cooled unit and be done with it. Check with manufacturers about coating options, etc for the harsh environment. As you know, water cooled gives you a whole second piping system to install and maintain. It will be more costly. And as you have mentioned, you can't find too many water cooler chillers rated for outdoor use.

The client already have this design . So he want a water cooled chiller as the cooling tower is already exist with it's piping just he want to replace the water cooled chiller.

The existing chiller is very old model with reciprocating compressors and it was made for this application.

I don’t have all the details of the container but technically it is a standard shipping container modified to accommodate the chiller, pumps, LV MCC, The cooling tower is optional. You can ask the manufacturer to supply what you need only.the bug question is what cooling capacity do you need ? Not all chillers will fit in a container.
