I am looking for some basic information from users of the Ovation Hart IO interface using Hart communications for data exchange between Ovation and instruments. Are there any particular requirements on the instrument; ie, is only Hart burst mode operation supported, what Hart commands are avaialable with Ovation? I have some web information from Emerson but not all of what I need. Thanks in advance.

schlebda,

Are you a member of the WDPF / Ovation user's group? Many of the manuals are available, plus the chance to discuss with other users. We're still running WDPF at present - our first Ovation system should be August this year. Sorry I can't help more.

I am pretty well acquainted with Hart but not at all acquainted with Ovation Hart I/O, except that I know that the Hart modem is multiplexed 8:1 on the Ovation Hart I/O module. And I am not seeking a comprehensive understanding of the Ovation system. I just want to know the basics of what the Ovation Hart I/O module and system expects from a connected Hart instrument; for example:
Assuming that an Ovation system implemented with the Hart I/O module and is connected to a Hart compatible instrument, how does Ovation get Hart data from the instrument? Is the Ovation Hart I/O module a Hart master device such that it interrogates the Hart slave with Hart commands (in this case, I would assume that Ovation is a Hart DD based master) ? Or does Ovation require that the Hart instrument be operating in Hart burst mode ? I also realize that Ovation Hart I/O might support both DD based Hart instrument commands as well as Hart burst mode and in this case my question would be which of the 2 Hart operation modes is preferred by the Ovation system?

You would be best off asking a vendor about burst mode, but everything should work pretty similar to a rosemount product. I have used Yokagawa w/ heart protocol in place of brain, and it was functionally (com wise) equivalent to Rosemount w/ heart...though I have only used burst mode with rosemount products.

I have a copy of the manual but it's pretty big - too large for the engineering.com file host. Anyone know a decent free file host which will host it long enough for schlebda to get it downloaded?
