Over rate excitation transformer for harmonics?

When selecting an excitation transformer for a static excitation system, is it necesasry to over rate the transformer to handle harmonics caused the thyristor swtiching?

From my point of view:
You MUST ask static excitation system supplier.
More better if it will be one package, less problem for you.

100% agree with Slava. The excitation transformer is almost always part of the AVR package and is normally supplied by the generator manufacturer or package integrator. Any reason why you're doing it yourself?

Rather than guess on an over-rating factor I would start by telling the prospective transformer manufacturer that the load was a controlled rectifier of whatever output is required and let them size it appropriately. They'd ask for more information for sure, and if they didn't I would look for a different manufacturer.

Thanks for the response guys. We are looking to purchase a spare transformer where one unit has already had a fault and been repaired.

We have had quite a varied response to date, despite telling the manufacturers the rating of the existing unit, so the question was more to verify the offers than anything. If we go with the same rating as the exsintg unit we cant go wrong I suppose, and I definitely agree with you last comments Scotty.
