Hello,

Curious if some could shed some light on the subject of overtime when you are a contract employee.

I started a project working within a company. They misjudged the time required for it. I have been working 55-60 hour weeks to keep the schedule.

I gave them a pretty fair rate, which is fine for the 40 hours. It would be nice to get some reward out of helping them meet deadlines.

Thanks.

Slightly dumb question - what does your contract say? Mine said I was employed for 1900 hours at a rate of one peanut per hour(approximately). So If I worked for 55 hours one week, my timesheet said 55 hours and I'd get paid 55 peanuts, less tax etc.

Cheers

Since you are for all practical purposes an hourly employee, your contract should at last for time and a half.

It depends on the fine print in the contract.
I worked as a jobshopper for years. If you were paid hourly, you generally got the overtime.
If you were paid a salary, it depended on the fine print.

Berkshire,

Thanks. When I started it was just a verbal contract as far as price. I'll talk with my manager about it.

I got around it by setting my hourly rate at time and a half for all my hours. I bill for the hours worked all at the same hourly rate. Seems to head off uncomfortable discussions.

Set it up - 40 hours at regular pay - time and a half over 40 - double time over say 56 hours!!

I talked with my boss today.

I presented it that I had been putting in a bunch of time to keep a project on target. He referred it to the HR person.

Could you be a little more direct?

That is good becasue you deserved to be paid for what you worked.
