Good day gents,

i have a question about P1 material being overlayed with F43, is it still consider as P1 material or what?

ie., if we have PQR of P1 material overlayed with F43 butt join to same material, can we use this PQR with P1 material without any overlay material? as in ASME IX, it's not state any comments on this thing.

Thank you very much for your opinion and helps!

In other words, you qualified a WPS for P1 to P43 material using F43 filler metal. You may not use this PQR for a P1 to P1 combination.

Hi metengr,

in my understanding, overlay welding is not kind of dissimilar weld. Because we only have 1 base material to be overlaid with F43 (it's same with joining P1 to P1 with F.6 filler). Because ASME Div. IX doesn't say anything about material being overlaid P and group number.

anyway thank you for your opinion.

Yes, overlay welding is a dissimilar metal weld per Section IX and would be qualified using one of the special process procedures, listed in QW-2xx.1, depending on the process. You cannot develop a P1 to P1 WPS using this overlay coupon.
