I have a valve application where a 10" class 150 butterfly valve is in a service that operates at 1300 °F, has 14% oxygen, 7% SO2, and balance N2 in the process stream. Valve steam leaks are a real problem. Conventional graphite packing oxidizes and disappears above 900 °F, which we have proved. Does anyone have any suggestions for alternate packing materials?

My other option is a re-designed custom valve with extended bonnet to get the packing away from the intense heat.

Unless you can keep air away from the graphite I don't think you have a choice but to extend the bonnet and/or add heat fins.

Master Flo has a metal stem seal but I don't know how well it works and doubt they'd sell it to a competitor. You could try metal C rings or U-cups but I'm betting they would eventually wear.

The only other thing I can think of is asbestos, but there aren't very many places left that still allow it to be used.

Sometime back we have used metal foil packing. This is a metal foil twisted to form packing, which can be cut formed into ring and can be used. But I don't have much details now.

You need to check with ADAMS valve, Houston Texas (713)973-2490. They have done extensive type research and testing on valves and valve packing at high temperature. They offer a triple offset butterfly valve that is used extensively in the power industry and Petrochemical. Use their engineering resources and expertise to help solve your problem

I suggest you contact one of the following packing manufacturers:
John Crane
Sepco
Garlock
Raybestos
