I have a reactor that has studs welded to pads that are welded to the shell for thermocouple attachment. During installation a few of the studs were damaged and need to be replaced. I believe that we can remove and re-weld the studs to the pad without affecting the PWHT of the vessel. This is a section VIII, div 2 vessel. Does anyone now were support for this can be found in the design code?

I don't want to speak to the Code and be out of line here, but I would listen to your QC folks above the superintendent or PM or client on this one.

They should be able to look in the Code and tell you for sure why/why not... and telling the judge that your PM said it was okay will most likely end up ruining your day.

Just my $0.02

As the studs are not welded to the pressure envelop, you should be able to reweld the studs without consideration of the affects on the envelpo, however if you want to take extra care, use a temper bead weld procedure as per the provision of UCS-56 in Div 1
