Paint Part Number Discussion

Need advice on how to align and how we deal with multiple paint schemes on common parts for separate customers. For instance, we have two control surfaces come in (ordered as part number xxx-1) then we paint it with the our company colors and the second with united airline colors. How do we track the differences? How do we know what we are consuming in the work order?

Paint is like decals, labels, etc in that each variation (color) should have a unique p/n for the raw material, an assembly print with paint instructions/surfaces, and roll up into a top-level assembly that fully defines the painted, salable product.

CWB1 thanks for the explanation as that is what I was thinking needed to be done. At another company we had multiple colored button switches in cockpits and we did a tabulated dwg to show each configuration with a unique p/n.

We would add a color suffix to the base number. 54987IP9099 would be safety yellow, 54987IP5081 would be same part but flat black[tt][/tt]
